Alan is a European Patent Attorney and is based in Belfast. Alan has over 20 years experience in the IP profession and provides a wide range of intellectual property services to local and international clients, including universities.
Alan specialises in electrical, electronic, software and ICT related inventions, and has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in these technical fields. He also has considerable skill and experience in other IP areas including managing global IP portfolios, IP assignments, licenses and contracts, patent searching, patent infringement and enforcement. Alan has a very high success rate in defending Oppositions at the European Patent Office (EPO), and has rare experience of High Court patent infringement actions. He is highly experienced in relation to designs, copyright and trade marks and so provides clients with a full complement of services. Alan regularly gives presentations and seminars on IP to local universities, colleges, companies and organizations, and has presented internationally on EPO patent law and practice.
Alan holds a Master of Engineering Degree (MEng) in electrical and electronic engineering from the Queen’s University of Belfast. He is a Partner in FRKelly, and previously worked as a hardware and software engineer with the Centre of Applied Microelectronics (ZAM eV) in Nurnberg, Germany.
